FIELD TRIPS - 2002 SPRING March 23,24 Braceville, Illinois 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. Mazon Creek Fossils. Field Trip #1 - March 23 Field Trip #2 - March 24 No Age Limit. Children under 10 must be supervised. Hard hats Not Required. Please call John Good at 630-483-2363 for reservations or e-mail at jgood10481@aol.com. Meet at the Amoco gas station in Coal City. Take I-55 to Exit 236 (Coal City). Take a right onto Highway 113 (Division Street). Go west to Broadway Street and Division in Coal City. We will be collecting Mazon Creek concretions from a old spoil pile. Helmets are not required. Boots are recommended. An Estwing rock hammer is the best tool. A small shovel or pick is helpful. Knee pads, backpacks, fanny packs, extra clothes (you will get wet and muddy) are also a plus. Bring a bucket for the fossils. In the late spring, summer and fall; bring insect repellant. Field Trip #3 Lone Star Quarry, Olgesby, Illinois - Fossils April 7, 2002 Sunday, 9:00 A.M. - 2:00 A.M. Age limit of 10 and above. Children must be supervised by parent. Hard Hats Required. Please call John Good at 630-483-2363 for reservations or e-mail at jgood10481@aol.com. Meet at the Lehigh Park at 9:00 A.M.. Take I-80 to Exit 81, South Hy 178. Take South Hy 178 south across the Illinois River. Turn right at Highway 71. Turn left at East 651st Road and take it across the Vermillion River into Walnut Street. At Walnut and East 651st Street is Lehigh park. Total distance from Hanover Park to LeHigh Park is 97 miles. We will be collecting fossils from a working quarry. Avoid the walls of the quarry. Shark's teeth have been found here. New areas of black shale have been exposed. Boots are recommended. An Estwing rock hammer is the best tool. April 12-14, 2002 MAPS - National Fossil Exposition XXIII This will be held at at the Student Union, in the Grand Ballroom, on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. The simplest way to the site is to turn off IL 67 west on University Drive, then go south to the Union (Follow the sign). Hours are: Friday 8:00a.m. -5:00 p.m. Sat. 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Sun. 8:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Lecture Friday Evening - Keynote speaker at 7:30 p.m. Silent Auction Friday, Saturday - During afternoon EXPO hours Live Auction Saturday night - Auction starts at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free (Membership in MAPS not required). We will meet at 8:00 A.M. at Shefflers Geode Mine 6 miles south of Alexandria, Missouri on Highway 61. Hard hats not required. Boots and safety glasses are recommended. An Estwing rock hammer is the best tool. Chisels, pick and pry bar are good also. Field Trip #5 - Fluorite Collecting in Marion, Kentucky April 27-28 8:00 A.M. $15 fee
Saturday April 27, we will be collecting Fluorite at the Columbia Mine in Marion, Kentucky. We will also visit the Clement Mineral Museum for a special tour and barbecue dinner. Sunday we will visit the Cave-In-Rock area and collect at the old mine dumps.
No Age Limit. Hard hats Not required. Bring shovel, pick, hammer and chisels. Wading boots will be needed. Please call John Good at 630-483-2363 for reservations or e-mail at jgood10481@aol.com. The fee is $15 for the collecting and $5 for a barbecue dinner Saturday night at the Museum if enough people show up. If fewer than 20 people attend, then dinner will be at a local restaurant. For 8 - 12, $10 for collecting and $3 for dinner. Under 8, free.

Please note that the Cave-In-Rock Ferry closes at 10:00 p.m. in the evening and that is the only close access over the Ohio River.
