Presidents Message 2007

January 2007 President’s Message

The holiday party at Villa Nova Restaurant was a great success. Our speaker was Frank Mercurio, an exhibition developer at the Field Museum. He showed us a preview of the new permanent exhibit – Ancient Americas. The exhibit will feature artifacts from the Hopewell, the Maya, the Inca, the mammoth hunters of North America, and many others. The exhibit is scheduled to open in 2007. It looks like a great exhibit and we are all looking forward to seeing it when it opens.

At the holiday party, the 2007 ESCONI Board was introduced. Jack Wittry has taken on an additional position as 1st Vice President. Don Cronauer has taken on an additional position as editor of the Earth Science News. Richard Rock is taking on Field Trips. Joe Kubal has volunteered to take over the junior group and its activities. The position of curator is still open.

I wish to thank the ESCONI board members for all their hard work and dedication to making ESCONI such a good club – without their time and efforts, our club would not be the great club it is. I am looking forward to working with this great team for another good year.

The new ESCONI PLANT BOOK will be available at all meetings or can call Jack Wittry at (630) 892-2020 to order a book(s) sent to you. Only ESCONI members are eligible to purchase the hard-cover book.

Be sure to check our website regularly for any updates of field trips, meeting topics and club news.

February 2007                 President’s Message

Okay, we are well into the winter season now so let’s start looking “ahead” toward spring.  We’ve got a lot to look forward to like getting out to collect a little more this year and, most of all, educating others interested in what ESCONI does.  The ESCONI show always needs volunteers….   So, after you get all fired up by attending our next general meeting and Paleofest don’t forget to share your passion with others by helping out at our annual show in mid March.  Let’s make this a show to remember.

  • FEBRUARY 10th GENERAL MEETING:  Dr. Roy Plotnick who currently teaches geology and invertebrate paleontology at the University of Illinois at Chicago will discuss Trace Fossils and the Evolution of Animals.  “Dr. Plotnick has published on a wide range of topics, including eurypterid and crinoid functional morphology, arthropod fossilization, and applications of fractals to paleontology and geology.” (p. 296, Richardson’s Guide to the Fossil Fauna of Mazon Creek by Shabica and Hay; Northeastern Illinois University, 1997.)  Check the ESCONI website www.esconi.org for updates.

  • PALEOFEST FEBRUARY 17th & 18th:  Burpee Museum's 9th annual PaleoFest.  See some of the nation's top paleontologists and learn how they use research and technology to piece together the mysteries of the past.  Fascinating lectures and fun-filled workshops are designed for all ages.  Lectures are recommended for ages 10 and up and family workshops are geared towards children and their families (1 adult required / 4 child). Tickets are available now 815.965.3433; ESCONI is a sponsor and will have a promotional table at this event. http://www.burpee.org/pf_home.htm

  • ELGIN PUBLIC MUSEUM FAMILY GEOLOGY NIGHT MARCH 16TH:  Friday, from 7 to 9 pm.  The Elgin Public Museum will host a Geology night so that visitors can explore the wonders of the museums geology collections. Children will be able to hold real fossils and watch a geode rock be split open to see the beauty inside. Adults and children alike will get a first hand look and many wondrous and rare rocks and fossils. The cost of the program is $5 per adult and $2 per child. For registration and information call The Elgin Public Museum at (847)741-6655 by March 9. http://www.elginpublicmuseum.org
