A test archaeological excavation will begin later this month at the site of a proposed levee near the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids.
City officials say Bear Creek Archeology Inc. of Cresco will begin the excavation on Sept. 19 to learn more about people who once lived in the area and to determine if the site is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
The excavations will take place in backyards of flood-damaged homes and buildings, in city parks and parking lots on the city's southeast side.
