From Wall Street Journal:
The company leading efforts to unlock the U.K.'s potentially vast shale-gas reserves suffered a setback Wednesday after a report found it was "highly probable" a controversial production technique caused two small earthquake tremors in the country earlier this year.
The report, which was financed by U.K. energy company Cuadrilla Resources Ltd., pointed to "strong evidence" that the two minor earthquakes and 48 weaker seismic events resulted from Cuadrilla's pumping drilling fluids used in hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking." At the same time, the report said the events were the result of a "rare combination of geological factors."

The crushing pressures and intense temperatures in Earth's deep interior squeeze atoms and electrons so closely together that they interact very differently. With depth materials change. BoingBoing on the history of birds and dinosaurs:
...The connection between dinosaurs and birds, while kind of flipping obvious once somebody points it out, was not much discussed among laypeople until I was in my teens. (That would be the 1990s, FYI.) But, among scientists, the idea of a dinosaur-bird relationship is nothing new. In fact, Thomas Henry Huxley was making that connection back in the 1860s...

Scientists used DNA and radiocarbon dating to demonstrate that the point came from a mastodon bone shaped into a weapon by humans and used a startling 13,800 years ago. That's nearly 1000 years before the Clovis culture, long considered to be the first culture in the New World....

... A team of researchers says it has found in a Russian mineral sample the first natural example of a quasicrystal, an unusual material that displays some of the properties of a crystal but boasts a more intricate and complex structure. Since quasicrystals were characterized 25 years ago, numerous versions have been cooked up in the laboratory, but a natural example would indicate that nature's products are more diverse than previously thought...The find could force a redefinition of minerals to include such quasicrystals...

Sat 3/3 | Ancient “Elephants” MarathonCome join us on Saturday, March 3, 2012 for a field trip as we explore many of the ancient elephants (a.k.a., mammoths and mastodons) that have been excavated and preserved around DuPage County. Rob Sula, lecturer and Jack MacRae, Naturalist, Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will lead us on the day-long excursion and field experience. This is a field trip to supplement Mr. MacRae’s January, 2012 ESCONI general meeting presentation and should bring additional insights into the area’s glacial and post-glacial past. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. for our first stop, Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, 3609 Spring Road (off of York and Ogden Avenues), Oak Brook 60523 where we will examine the reconstructed remains of a 13,000-year-old woolly mammoth which is on display. Next we travel to Wheaton College where we encounter the 11,000-year old Perry mastodon which was found in nearby Glen Ellyn. The mastodon spins on a turntable to show both its skeletal remains and as it appeared when it was “fleshed out.” We also may have a short presentation by the exhibit’s curator. There is an audio presentation at the exhibit as well. Afterward, there is a lunch break (on your own). After lunch, we will reconvene at Blackwell Forest Preserve, Winfield to see the site where the Fullersburg mammoth was first discovered and where Mr. MacRae will bring hands-on examples of ancient elephant bones and teeth. Our trip will conclude with Rob Sula providing a tour of the Phillips’s Park Visitor’s Center and Mastodon Gallery in Aurora where we will continue our investigations of the Chicagoland area during glacial times. Outside the facility is a full-size replica of a mastodon. On exhibit, are prehistoric bones, tusks, and teeth of the huge creatures that roamed Aurora at the time of the last glaciers. We will view a 15-minute presentation on how the mastodons were found in Phillip’s Park. There is no cost for this field trip. However, please remember that field trips are only open to current ESCONI members. The field trip is open all ESCONI members. This field trip also is limited to 30 participants. Reservations are being taken until February 25th. First-come, first served. Driving instructions to all the sites will be available at Fullersburg Woods. We are scheduled to end the excursion around 5:00 p.m. For further information or to make your reservation, please contact Joe Kubal, ESCONI Event Coordinator, 30W600 Sunrise Road, Naperville, IL 60563, 630-983-6159, [email protected]. |

ESCONI Field Trip - (written by Joseph Kubal): There is a small archaeology museum housed at nearby Wheaton College. I have arranged for ESCONI members to tour the museum on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. We are to meet in the lobby of the Billy Graham Center Museum located at 500 E. College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187-5593. Dr. Adam Miglio, Museum Curator, will explain the artifacts housed in this modest facility, discuss collecting in Palestine, explain how archaeology adds to Biblical scholarship, and answer questions that participants may have. There is no cost to visit the museum. If you need additional information, please contact Joseph D. Kubal at [email protected] or call me at 630-983-6159. There is no need to RSVP for this trip, just show up. Some information about the museum is located at http://www.wheaton.edu/Academics/Departments/Theology/Archaeology-Museum. In addition, I probably am going to the nearby Wade Library, 351 East Lincoln, which is also on the Wheaton College campus. It opens at 9:00 a.m. It contains C.S. Lewis' wardrobe cabinet which may have instilled the idea for The Chronicles of Narnia's "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." Other displays include an original map of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien's (The Lord of the Rings) writing desk. See http://www.wheaton.edu/wadecenter/. Again, there is no cost to visit. Finally, the Billy Graham Center Museum itself will be open to interested visitors after our visit to the archaeology museum. More information is available at http://www.wheaton.edu/bgcmuseum. There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome. Some come and make a day of it. And, of course if you did not make the ESCONI Ancient Elephants Marathon Field Trip that was run in March, 2012, you could visit the Wheaton Science Center, (also on-campus), http://www.wheaton.edu/Buildings/Wheaton-Science-Center, which houses “an unique, interactive atrium museum featuring the [11,000 year old] Perry Mastodon [that was found in nearby Glen Ellyn], a geology exhibit, a natural history exhibit, a Foucault pendulum, and additional exhibits.” The Wheaton College Science Center is on the southwest corner of the intersection of Howard and University Avenues. Admission is free.
