The talk will be illustrated with slides showing Tyler's process and finished results, and some examples of his sculptures will be on hand for a closeup look after the talk.

Archaeology Study Group Meeting. 7:30 p.m. College of Dupage, - Tech Ed Building (TEC), Room 1038B (Map) Topic: Lexi Kiamco will present - United Kingdom History and Archaeology The United Kingdom has a very interesting history, full of Romans, Welsh, Scots, English, Irish, and their fair share of Norwegians. Starting at the Roman Empire's invasion in 55 BC by Julius Caesar, and ending with the Norwegian invasion in 1066, we will be taken on a long and grand tour of The United Kingdom's history and archeology. There will be everything from Julius Caesar’s failed attempt to even take a beach, to the bloody three-way battle for the crown between William II of Normandy, Harold II of the Anglo-Saxons, and Harald Hardrada of the Norwegians. Our journey will cover over 1,100 years of English history. NOTE: The archaeological study group auction will be deferred to a later date please stay tuned for further updates. |

Topic: The Rancho La Brean Dire Wolf And What Its Bones Can Tell Us: A Brief Look Into The Life Of Canis dirus And What Became Of This Great Predator-
Canis dirus, the dire wolf from the tar pits of Rancho La Brea was the dominant canid predator during the Pleistocene and thrived alongside other large carnivores such as Smilodon fatalis and Panthera atrox, the American lion. The dire wolf also interacted and coexisted with the modern wolf (Canis lupus) when it reached North America. Looking at the fossils of Canis dirus found at Rancho La Brea both the dire wolf and modern wolf appear to be anatomically similar as well as share comparable hunting styles. At the end of the last glacial maximum Canis dirus died out along with the other megafauna of the time while Canis lupus survives into today. Clues as to why the dire wolf may have died out can be seen in the dentition and skeletal remains of this large canid. |

Take a step back in time over 4,000 years and explore the ancient world of cylinder, lead, and ring seals. From the beginning of civilization as we know it in Mesopotamia through the middle ages, cultures have used various types of seals to authenticate and seal documents, prove ownership, and were often used as amulets. In addition to functionality, seals are also known for their artistic quality. The seal that a person owned, was often representative of their hierarchical status in the community. Eric will discuss some of the key varieties of these ancient seals, and look at the artistic qualities that made them an absolute treasure of the ancient world. If you have an interest in the ancient world or art in general, be sure to attend this discussion and see why seals are perhaps one of the most beautiful treasures which are certainly one of a kind, and often no larger than a quarter In addition, Eric will bring a couple different seals to coincide with the lecture. The seals, are about 2000 years old and are a good representation of artistic qualities from the ancient world. |

I will discuss some of my most recent discoveries that make Smilodon fatalis, the saber-tooth cat from Rancho La Brea in California, the fearsome predator it is. New conclusions regarding the interaction of musculoskeletal structure and function demonstrate that this saber-tooth had some movement capabilities enhancing its abilities to capture prey and not previously discovered in other feline predators. In other words, Smilodon did some of the same things as did other saber-tooth and feline predators, but used entirely different and unique anatomical means to do so. This work is part of a larger study in which I am investigating the locomotor capabilities of this large cat. The anatomy of Smilodon was featured in one of the most famous monographs in vertebrate paleontology, The Felidae of Rancho La Brea, in 1932 by Merriam and Stock, and my goal is to write the sequel, or The Functional morphology of Smilodon fatalis from Rancho La Brea, even if the timing is slightly more than 80 years later. I will take the audience on a tour of the discovery of these attributes and explain what has been learned and where I plan to go from here in studying this fascinating animal. |

Snapshot in time – Geologic Secrets of the Springfield Coal Fossilized Forests Scott Elrick, from the Illinois State Geological Survey, will describe a 300-million-year-old fossilized forest, found along the Galatia channel, an ancient river that flowed across southern Illinois. This ancient forest is the world’s largest intact rain forest from the Pennsylvanian Period ever to be discovered. Preserved along 150 miles of the Galatia channel river banks, the forest’s sheer size offers an unprecedented view of ancient forest life and diversity. Discovered in the roof of multiple underground coal mines, this rare find, opens a tantalizing window into the past. The forest plants and their encapsulating geology reveal much about the ancient environmental conditions during the time of their formation and about the coal they left behind. Scott will describe the geology surrounding this amazing underground discovery and the geologic and climatic factors that led to the remarkable preservation of this fossil forest. |

The Midwestern Mammoth and Mastodon project (aka, the M-cubed project) is a multi-year effort to 1) inventory proboscidean collections across the region, 2) tighten up the chronology of mammoth and mastodon extinctions, and 3) explore the paleoecology of these animals through high-resolution stable isotope studies (i.e., chemical signatures of diet and mobility). Collectively, these studies suggest a more nuanced story of mammoth and mastodon extinction in the Midwest. This presentation will focus on our evolving understanding of proboscidean ecology and extinction in the region. |

Into 2012, archaeologists unearthed the remains of Richard the Third of England. This find is not only archaeologically significant, it is also historically remarkable. What made King Richard the third so famous? How were Archaeologists able to prove that the bones were actually his? Where was his grave actually found?Attend this study group meeting and find out the answers to these interesting questions. Archaeology Study Group Meeting. 7:30 p.m. College of Dupage, - Tech Ed Building (TEC), Room 1038B (Map) Topic: This history of money in the United States: Colonial Currency and its evolution from the early 1700's to the Revolutionary War: By Eric Schmidt Travel back in time to when the British controlled the colonies. The Paper Currency system that was used has changed dramatically over the last 230+ years. Eric will take you on a journey from the dawn of the paper currency system to the independence of the colonies after the Revolutionary War. Some of the currency used was quite beautiful, others quite crude. Most were hand signed. Some are extremely valuable, others are quite common.
