The following pictures are from a field trip to St. Paul Stone Company in St. Paul, IN on October 30th, 2010. This quarry has a large exposure of the legendary Waldron Shale, which dates back to the Silurian Period. The Waldron is known for many, many types of fossils, including trilobites, crinoids, brachiopods, sponges, snails, cephalopods, bryozoans, coral, cystoids, and much, much more. The blog Louisville Fossils provides a partial list. Additiionally, the Waldron is famous for both the quantity and the quality of preservation.
ESCONI tries to make a yearly trip to collect this formation. If you can make it, you will not be disappointed!
These photos were taken by ESCONI member Andrew Young. You can see the whole set here.
