This is Throwback Thursday #56. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!

Time for another poem from the past. This was published in the June 1970 edition of the newsletter. It was written by Beverly June Meininger, who was a non-resident ESCONI member living in Oxford, Wisconsin. It has an interesting structure, using the individual letters in ESCONI.
"ESCONI"
Escape from our weary daily toil.
Eager for fellowship and for fun.
Enjoyment as our hands sift thru soil.
Enriching our minds under God's sun.
Everyday, everyone, everywhere,
Enthused, enthralled; Earth; Her secrets to share.Special are the monthly meeting days.
Splendid times enjoyed by one and all.
Sharing ideas, helpful hints, new ways.
Spontaneous aid to anyone's call.
Specimens, showmanship, sketches, slides.
Spiritedly seeking Science in strides.Comradeship enjoyed on each field trip.
Carefree traveling to Park and Pit.
Choice hunting sights to chisel and chip.
Champions in laughter and in wit.
Country men. City men. Elbows rub.
Congenial companions comprise our Club.Open heart, open mind, open hand.
Offering each our invitation.
Only knowledge to take from the land.
Owing to nature, preservation.
Occupied opening a new group
Of others outside, join our happy troopNature has given us much glory.
Nowhere such fascination is found.
Nightly we gladly study its' story.
Noons to the field we are often bound.
Nuggets, nodules, natica, fern.
No area neglected; ours? Northern!Interest in the earth is our main.
Identifying every find.
Inspecting each crystal, each sand grain.
Interpreting deposits left behind.
Intriguing investment, natures' joy.
In every state. Yoh! Yeh! Illinois!
