This is Throwback Thursday #58. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week we have a look back at ESCONI 25 and 50 years ago... May 1996 and May 1971.
25 Years Ago - May 1996
- The Juniors took a field trip to Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop and Mitchell Indian Museum (now called Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, in Evanston).
- The CGMA show was held on Memorial Day weekend. At this time CGMA was comprised of 10 clubs instead of the current 6. The Calumet Gem and Mineral Society, Duneland Rock Club, Fox Valley Rocks and Minerals Society, Greater Oak Lawn Diggers, and Park Forest Earth Science Club no longer exist.
- The general meeting program was “Sifting Through the Past: Archaeology at Fort Michilimackinac” by Heather Lau, a volunteer and archaeologist at Mackinac State Historic Parks.
- Andy Hay discussed Clams of the Francis Shale in Creature Corner. This was the next to last article in the series.
- Dave Carlson wrote an article entitled "Paleontology Resources on the Internet". Who remembers listservers? The DINOSAUR mailing list still exists!
50 Years Ago - May 1971
- Dr. Harry Raplus of Upper Iowa College was the General Meeting speaker. His topic was "Rock Hunting in Latin America".
- The Juniors took a field trip to Pit 11.
- As of April 15, 1971 the club had 166 junior members!
- The May Field Trip was to southern Indiana and Kentucky for fossils and minerals.
- ESCONI junior member Bruce Lauer (!) received a ribbon for his exhibit at the meeting.
