25 Years Ago - February 1997
- "The Geology of the Indiana Dunes" was the topic of the General Meeting. It was given by Bill Smith a US Park Ranger.
- The Paleontology Study Group was discussing the Silurian Period.
- Planning for the 1997 Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show was in full swing. The show was held on March 1st and 2nd and the College of DuPage.
- Copies of the original manuscripts of the Langford books were added to the library. The originals are at the Illinois State Museum.
- The American Fluorite Museum opened in Rosiclare, IL.
- The Lizzadro Museum had a couple of interesting lectures - "Amber: The Golden Gem of the Geologic Past" and "Build a Dinosaur!".
50 Years Ago - February 1972
- ESCONI was asked to provide a display for the Chicago Public Library during the month of February. It was a mineral display.
- The General Meeting was about the Koster Site an archaeological site in Illinois that dates to about 7500 BCE.
- The Paleontology Study Group program was "Nautiloids, Ammonoids, and Belemnoids". The discussion was led by Fred Labahn.
- The Lizzadro Museum had two lectures - "Evidence for the Ice Age" and "Crystals and their Structure".
- The "Micro-Mount" of the Month was Calcite by Dorothy Schnizlein. Unfortunately, no photo!
- There was a field trip to visit the Perry Mastodon at Wheaton College on February 5th.
70 Years Ago - February 1952
- There was a call for exhibits for the next meeting - March 9th, 1952. Dr. Robert Whitfield of the Field Museum was the scheduled speaker.
- The question of the month was "Were crinoids plants or animals?". Why, animals of course! And, sea lilies are extant crinoids!
- The newsletter had an article entitled "Exploring the world of gems".
- The Allaway's (Bill was chairman of ESCONI) were remodeling their home. There was speculation as to whether the main floor would be dedicated to rocks and minerals!
