25 Years Ago - March 1997
- The ESCONI Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show for 1997 was held on March 1st and 2nd.
- The Devonian was discussed by the Paleontology Study Group... we missed it by 1 month as we talked about the Devonian in February!
- Mexican Opals were the subject of the Lapidary Study Group, while Mineralogy/Micromount looked at diamonds... micro-diamonds.
- Kathy and Judy Dedina were presented with ESCONI Honorary Memberships, both were long time active members. Kathy was president from 1989-90 and Judy was historian from 1990-1997.
- Bryan Nugent joined ESCONI!
50 Years Ago - March 1972
- The Chicago World Flower and Garden Show was held from March 18th-28th, 1972 and ESCONI had a display!
- It cost $2 to attend the Chicago World Flower and Garden Show.
- "Plant Life Through the Ages" was at the Lizzadro Museum. "Plant Life" was a traveling ESCONI display, which was created in the 1950's.
- The topic of the March 1972 General Meeting was "New Look At Old Bones" by David Techer Curator of Natural Sciences at the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
- An Indoor Field Trip was held on March 4th, 1972 at the Hummer Park Field House in Downers Grove, IL. It included exhibits and a rock swap.
70 Years Ago - March 1952
- The McLuckie's house in Coal City was mentioned. The description is includes the fossilized trees and stumps in their backyard along with the basement museum. Stop by and sign the guest book as many others have!
- The newsletter mentioned Earth Science Digest and its move to the Chicago area.
- Steve Norvell wrote a piece for the newsletter titled "Our Fossil Ferns - Why They Occur in Form-Fitting "Pebbles"".
- Alan Kattelle wrote an article to describe his family trip to Galena. He call it "In Quest of Galena". He was given a grapefruit sized chunk of galena and sphalerite as his wife and three year old daughter found other minerals. Oh... and they had a run-in with wasps at the Tri-State Mine.
