Babylonian numbers from June 1952
25 Years Ago - June 1997
- For June 7th and 8th, 1997, there was a field trip to the Cedar Rapids, IA area.
- The General Meeting was "The Scenic Geology of California" by Mark Sutherland.
- Mineralogy/Micromount discussed minerals of the Flambeau Mine in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.
- The Sullivan Springs archaeological site in Chicago was mentioned in the newsletter. Back in 1965, some ESCONI members participated in research at the site.
- The MWF was looking for some cedar gavels given out to rock clubs in the the midwest.
- Ticks and Lyme Disease were a issue even back then... some tips from Cedar Valley Gems was posted in the newsletter.
50 Years Ago - June 1972
- Dr. Charles Shabica presented "Life & Death of the Mazon Creek Fossils" at the General Meeting. It mostly concentrated on the stratigraphy of Pit 11.
- The Mineralogy Study Group discussed places to collect minerals during summer vacation season.
- "Those Full Moons May Be Murderous" was reprinted in the newsletter from the Chicago Daily News.
- ESCONI membership stood at 541!
70 Years Ago - June 1952
- The General Meeting was the annual social affair, where various members gave short talks which we carefully selected (selected for their brevity of speech).
- Quite a few books were added to the ESCONI library including a bunch from various geological surveys. The US, Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa figured prominently.
- Jay Farr concluded his article "What Do Archaeologists Say About Civlization".
- Stevens Norvell wrote about "Illinois' Unusual Soil".
- Mayan and Babylonian number symbols appeared in the newsletter... anyone fluent in base 20 or base 60?
