25 Years Ago - July 1997
- Falls of the Ohio announced their first "Falls Fossil Festival" for September 20th - 21st, 1997
- There was a report on the 21st Annual Chicagoland Gem and Mineral Show - ESCONI participated and provided many volunteers.
- A warning from the AFMS newsletter... porcupines LOVE the taste of brake fluid. Wow! Who knew?
- Raymond Wiggers, geologist and author, gave a talk about geologic tours on July 19th, 1997.
- New member - Jann and Michael Bergsten - Jann is still an active member. Ask her about her trips to Lyme Regis.
50 Years Ago - July 1972
- Dues were $2 for active members, $1.25 for non-residents, and $0.75 for juniors.
- Definition - Pebble Pup, Smartmouth kid who knows more about rocks than you.
- The Kyana 1972 Gem and Mineral Show was held at the Kentucky State Fair Grounds & Exposition Center in Louisville, KY on July 1st and 2nd, 1972.
- Mrs. A Dwight found a light colored, banded, unfinished cabachon after the June 9th meeting at Highland School. If you are the anxious owner of this departed gem, give her a call.
- The Memorial Day field trip to Grant County, Wisconsin for Platteville Ordovician fossil was attended by 86 members! Wow!
70 Years Ago - July 1952
- There was a field trip to Bellevue, IA for agates on July 13th, 1952.
- Roy Beghtol was lamenting the work of International Harvester as it was working to restore the strip mine territory. Fern fossils were becoming hard to find!
- The Great Copper Mountain Mine in Falun, Sweden was still operating in 1952. It had been owned by the same firm for 1220 years and operated continuously for 750. It closed in 1992. Apparently, 770 years was enough...
- Definition - Fossicker, in the "Land Down Under" (Australia), Fossicker means rockhound.
- Dr. Ben Hur Wilson was given an honorary membership for the invaluable aid he has given the club. You might remember him from Throwback Thursday #69 about the Benld meteorite.
