ESCONI member Maarten Vonhof sent us these photos of a beautiful Sphenopteris sp. from the ESCONI Spring 2022 Danville field trip. Sphenopteris is a genus of seed ferns, which are also found in the Mazon Creek fossil deposit. There is a guide to the fossils from the Herrin coal on our website. Unfortunately, this species isn't shown.
By the way, Saturday, September 17th, 2022, is the fall field trip to the Danville spoil pile. Last we checked, there were a few open spots on the trip. Maybe, we will see you there?
Maarten put this concretion through the freeze/thaw process and it popped open a few weeks ago. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous specimen, Maarten! Maybe someone will find another one this weekend?!?
