This is Throwback Thursday #138. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!

Today, we have poem from the Chicago Lapidary Club, which doesn't seem to exist anymore. There is a few photos of club pins online.
The poem is attributed to R. Rindt and appeared in the October 1997 edition of the ESCONI newsletter.
UNDER YOUR FEET
Under your feet there's a story to be told,
Waiting in the form of rocks to unfold.
The fossils entombed in limestone so fast,
Reveal forms of life from out of the past.
The thousands of acres of petrified wood,
Indicate where ancient forests once stood.
The Glacial deposits and Kettle Moraine,
Show how the ice sheet formed our terrain.
The igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, and conglomerate,
Show how there basic forms did originate.
Along our great rivers thousands of mounds,
Mark the locations of vast burial grounds.
The implements and tools made by aboriginal man,
Is lasting evidence of the first artisan.
From these primitive cultures it can be resolved,
How our present day standards gradually evolved.
Under your feet all this can be found,
With a little effort and by looking around.-- R. Rindt
