This is Throwback Thursday #152. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!

The following list of ten "Rockmandments" appeared in the December 1992 edition of the ESCONI newsletter. It originally appeared in the newsletter for the Nunawading & District Lapidary Club in Nunawading, Victoria, Australia. It's good to see that the club seems to still be operation! It was founded in 1967.
Nunawading and District Lapidary Club was formed in 1967 by a group of enthusiasts to allow them to meet and improve their skill in all the lapidary arts; cutting cabochons, faceting, silver-smithing and jewelery making. In early 2021 we moved to our fantastic new club rooms at the Nunawading Community Hub, 96-106 Springvale Rd, Nunawading VIC 3131, Australia.
There's some serious looking lapidary on their Facebook page!
The Ten Rockmandments
- Thou shalt not touch thy neighbours minerals unless he places them in thy hands.
- Thou shalt not test the strength of crystals by pushing, squeezing or hitting.
- Thou shalt not drop thy neighbour's fossils for many do not bounce properly.
- Thou shalt not place thy neighbour's specimen in thine own pocket.
- Thou shalt not test thy neighbour's gemstones for hardness by rubbing them together.
- Thou shalt not argue the name of that mineral too violently, some- times thou could be wrong.
- Thou shalt not climb above thy neighbour when on a field trip unless thou art willing to spend the remainder of the day digging him out.
- Thou shalt protest thy own eyes, hands and feet so that thou can enjoy many many field trips.
- Thou shalt not encroach upon thy neighbour's digging lest his hammer be dropped upon thy toe.
- Thou shalt not complain about or denounce thy club officials under penalty of being elected one thyself.
