25 Years Ago - April 1998
- The Gem, Mineral, and Fossil show for 1998 was huge success. The newsletter had a report.
- There were 48 display cases at the show! Where did they find the room?
- The newsletter had a paper on the life of George Langford Sr. (1876-1963) by Richard L. Leary of the Illinois State Museum.
- Dave Bergmann was planning two one week trips for the summer. One to Keweenaw, Michigan and the other to Nebraska.
- The Mineralogy/Micromount Study Group was discussing Opals.
50 Years Ago - April 1973
- The General Meeting topic was devoted to the various junior groups.... of which there were two - Downers Grove and Western Springs.
- The Paleontology Study Group was learning about the bryozoa, colenterata, and echinodermata of the Ordovician of Grant County, Wisconsin.
- On April 7th, 1973, there was a field trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan for Selenite Crystals.
- Chicago Rocks and Minerals Society held their show on April 7th and 8th.
- The Micromount of the Month was Diamond!
70 Years Ago - April 1953
- Chairman Jay Farr gave some spring and summer tips for collecting in his monthly message.
- The General Meeting's topic was "Quartz - the Crystal" by Dr. B. J. Babbitt, editor of the Earth Science Digest.
- There was a field trip on April 19th, 1953 to Cave of the Mounds near Madison, Wisconsin. Apparently, there was a 6-foot cephalopod fossil discovered there.
- Research in 1953 put the age of the Rocky Mountains at around 40 million years old. The current accepted age is between 80 and 55 million years. We've learned much about geologic dating techniques since then.
