25 Years Ago - May 1998
- Ken Anderson of Argonne National Laboratory spoke at the General Meeting about a fossil forest in the Arctic
- The Paleontology Study Group was discussing the Cretaceous Period.
- Dave Bergmann was selling Cutting Oil for $7.50 a gallon. The current price seems to be around $47.00 a gallon on Amazon.
- Dino News featured a section called "Tails and Necks" about the latest research on sauropods. Carl Zimmer, Nathan Myhrvold (Microsoft), and Phil Currie teamed up on a study to understand their biomechanics. Muhrvold visited the Field Museum and met SUE!
- The 22nd Annual CGMA Gem, Mineral, and Fossil show was held Saturday, May 23rd thru Sunday, May 25th, 1998. It's only held on Saturday and Sunday now.
50 Years Ago - May 1973
- The General Meeting featured Linn Buss a geologist and guide at the Oriental Museum at the University of Chicago. He spoke about his recent trip to Egypt. A slide show was included.
- "Wanted --- Dead --- (Not Alive)" read the entry in the newsletter. ESCONI was taking donations for a fossil display in the Pit 11 office. Dick Ade led the effort.
- Mineralogy was talking about mineral identification. Mica, garnet, feldspar, serpentine, marcasite, calcite, hornblende, quartz, flourite, etc, etc...
- There was a field trip to DeWitt, IA on May 5th and 6th.
- Paleontology had a field trip to the Richmond, IN area to collect fossils. Fossils are just spilling out of the road cuts in southern Indiana.
- The Fossil of the Month was Anthracomedusa turnbullii. A jellyfish from the Mazon Creek deposit. Rich Rock did a nice report.
70 Years Ago - May 1953
- Mr. James O. Montague was the speaker at the General Meeting. His topic was "Soils and Soil Elements".
- The ISGS held a field trip on May 9th, 1953. They explored the bedrock strata of Ordovician and Silurian ages, Tertiary plenplain, Illinois glacial drift and Peorian loess, and marine fossils.
- ESCONI was hunting for beautiful Lake Superior agates on a field trip to Miscatine, IA on May 17th.
- The Archaeology Study Group met at Starved Rock to "study the rock".
- The Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies held their 13th Annual Convention from Friday, May 26th until Sunday, May 28th, 1953 in St. Louis, MO. There were lectures, displays, auctions, and field trip throughout the weekend.
- ESCONI Chairman Jay Farr wrote an article about "Damascas Steel" for the newsletter.
