We have a gorgeous little Annularia sphenophylloides for this week's Fossil Friday. We highlighted A. sphenophylloides back in Mazon Monday #123. Annularia is the extinct form genera given to the leaves of Calamites. August von Gutbier (1798-1866), a German paleontologist, described it way back in 1837 from fossils found near Germany.
This particular specimen was submitted by Caden McDonald, who found it while fossil hunting with his dad Heath. The whorls are beautifully preserved. This fossil was part of his display at the Chicagoland Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show back in late May 2023.
Thanks for sharing, Caden! It's always great to hear stories from young fossil collectors.
Caden's full display at the CGMA. I see some other nice fossils in there... good luck! We hope you find many more!
