Lepidodendron, also known as “scale tree”, is an extinct prehistoric tree which was one of the most abundant trees of the Carboniferous period. They grew densely and some could get very tall, maybe 180 feet! Common in the coal swamps of the Pennsylvanian Period is mostly made up of Lepidodendron.
