25 Years Ago - October 1998
- The Paleontology Study Group was having a look at the Tertiary Period and the Rise of Mammals.
- ESCONI held the 1998 Flea Market on October 3rd, 1998. We don't hold the Flea Market every year.
- The Lapidary Study Group was making cabochons.
- A committee was set up to work on the 50th anniversary issue of the newsletter.
- There was a field trip to Pit 11 on October 5th, 1998.
- The Midwest Federation awarded Jim and Sylvia Konecny 2nd place for their "Is the Tully Monster Really Extinct?" article. Rich Rock got 6th place for "Collecting Selenite Crystals at Great Plains State Park".
50 Years Ago - October 1973
- October 6th, 1973 was the date of a field trip to the Thornton Quarry.
- The Micromount Study Group was discussing pyrite and marcasite.
- Lapidary had a presentation on opals by Bob and Lee Peterson.
- The Archaeology Study Group was learning about Stonehenge.
- Bill Kelly had an article "Homo Sapiens" in the newsletter.
70 Years Ago - October 1953
- The Fall Auction was held on October 9th, 1953.
- There was a Braidwood field trip on October 18th, 1953... surprise, surprise.... they were collecting fern fossils. These trips were led by John McLuckie.
- Dr. Fleener wrote a "Mineral Identity - Hardness" article for the newsletter. There were others in his series.
- There was a report of ESCONI's participation in the Downers Grove Fall Festival. Jay Farr and his wife displayed minerals, while B.J. Babbitt and others displayed Mazon Creek fossils.
