For this week, we have a beautiful Alethopteris serlii. A. serlii is a seed fern, which are an extinct group of plants that disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous Period. See Mazon Monday #57 for more information.
This particular specimen was collected in Pit 1 on July 4th, 1969 by Jim or Sylvia Konecny. At the time, Pit 1 was the site of the Greer School, which trained construction workers to drive heavy equipment.. The site now hosts Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington, IL.
The photo below shows Jim and Sylvia Konecny with Tony Sobolik giving a lifetime award to Lucy McLuckie. Lucy is on the left, followed by Sylvia, Tony, and Jim.
