Marcasite from the Lutz Quarry
25 Years Ago - June 1999
- Dr. Deborah Bakken of the Field Museum presented at the General Meeting. Her topic was "Pleistocene Archaeology in China".
- Bealis Giddings led a field trip to the Lone Star Quarry. They were looking for shark teeth, fish scales, trilobites, crinoids, and lots and lots of brachiopods.
- Ron Sula discussed his love for all things dinosaur. He spoke specifically about the Hell Creek Formation and what could be found out west.
- The newsletter has an article entitled "Before Alvarez". It discussed the proposed theories of non-avian dinosaur extinction before the asteroid strike was discovered.
- DINE News reported that the Field Museum had a live camera on the preparators working on SUE.
50 Years Ago - June 1974
- The General Meeting featured a talk by Mr, George Svihla of Argonne National Laboratory. He discussed the ecology of the Ogden Dunes of Indiana.
- The Archaeology Study Group had a field trip to the Koster Site and Cahokia.
- The National Gem and Mineral Show was held at the State Fairgrounds in Lincoln, NB.
- The Micromount of the Month was Laurionite from Laurium, Greece.
- The newsletter had an article about pearls.
- A Sun Times article was reprinted in the newsletter, the title... "The Once-Mighty Colorado: Tamed by Man - or Raped?" Overuse of water is not a new problem!
70 Years Ago - June 1954
- The Regular Meeting was a panel discussion about the "Thornton Dig".
- The Juniors had a field trip to the strip mines... adults were also invited.
- The 1954 Midwest Convention was held in Milwaukee, WI. ESCONI had an exhibit.
- There was a field trip to the Lutz Quarry near Oshkosh, WI. (See Throwback Thursday #22)
- The Fluorspar Mine at Rosiclare, IL closed after 100 years of operation.
