This is Throwback Thursday #220. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!

Peggy Allaway wrote an untitled poem for the November 1950 edition of the ESCONI newsletter. Peggy was the daughter of Bill Allaway, the first President of ESCONI. Jay Farr was the inspiration of this poem. There are a few stories of collecting trips by him in the newsletter archive. He served as president of ESCONI from 1952 - 1954.
It sure seems like they were very serious about collecting... getting up early, staying out all day, getting back late, and then staying up even later. This sounds very familiar!
It's a little hot out there right now. Hope everyone got plenty of trips in back in early spring.
The photos below are both from a field trip to Pit 11 in 1959. The Allaways are on the left in the first photo.
Jay Farr is on left in this photo.
Look at clock
Hearty yawn
My word
Almost dawn.
Phone rings
Start of day
Hunt rocks?
Okay.
Down stairs
Eat fast
Breakfast gone
At last.
Out side
Car there
Jay Farr
Tearing hair.
Stout shoes
Large sack
Put axe
In back.
Hours drive
End of line
Have reached
Coal mine.
Fern leaf
Cry of joy
Just like
Child with toy.
More stones
And rocks
Put them
In box.
Collect things
All day
Grows dark
Can't stay.
Sun sets
Grows late
Rock hounds
Home at eight.
Back tired
Feet sore
Got rocks
Galore.
In basement
Till ten
Back to
Bed again.
Look at clock
Hearty yawn
My word
Soon be dawn.- Peggy Allaway
