This is Throwback Thursday #224. In these, we look back into the past at ESCONI specifically and Earth Science in general. If you have any contributions, (science, pictures, stories, etc ...), please sent them to [email protected]. Thanks!

On Thursday, September 14, 2000. ESCONI co-sponsored a Steven J. Gould lecture with the Field Museum. This was a huge event for ESCONI, with about 700 people attending. By all accounts, it was very successful. Too bad, Steven isn't still with us, I'm sure that was a very interesting lecture. If you get a chance, read some of his books, he does a great job telling stories and presenting concepts from a somewhat unconventional viewpoint.
Stephen J. Gould
One of Gould's popular books, this one somewhat controversially on the Burgess Shale.
At that time, Joe Kubal was President of ESCONI, while Irene Broede and Karen Nordquist were vice-presidents. Jim Fairchild was Treasurer. Irene Broede did quite a bit to make this event a success. She is the longest standing ESCONI member, having joined in 1956! She and her husband appear in the December 1956 issue of The Earth Science News. She has served in many capacities over the years, including 1st or 2nd Vice President. Thank you for your efforts over the many years! It has helped make ESCONI what it is today!
The flyer is shown below. It appeared in the September 2000 issue of "The Earth Science News".

The Stephen Jay Gould lecture that we co-sponsored with the Field Museum was very successful, with approximately 700 people in the audience.
Our President, Joe Kubal, did a great job of explaining the club's activities and goals at the start of the program. Thank you Joe!
ESCONI had a table outside the Simpson Theatre, where people could get information about the club, pick up sample bulletins, or buy the ESCONI Fossil books. Thanks to Jim Fairchild, Andy Hay, Karen Nordquist, and Joe Kubal for helping at the table.
The people in charge of the Museum Lecture Series were Beth Adams and Encarnacion Teruel, they made all the contacts with the speaker, took care of the publicity and organized everything. Beth and Encarnacion expressed their thanks for our co-sponsorship of this program many times.
Irene Broede, 1st Vice President
