Sphenophyllum emarginatum is an extinct species of plants related to modern day horsetails. Its sister taxa Annularia is more commonly found in the Mazon Creek fossil deposit. The parent plant would have been similar to Calamites. We looked at S. emarginatum in Mazon Monday #256.
This particular specimen was preserved in 3D as they often are. That can make the fossil a little fragile. The fossil was collected from the Pit 3 localtity in 2024.
