We have a gorgeous Calamostachys tuberculata cone from the Mazon River for this week's Fossil Friday. It was sent in by George Witaszek. When George sends something in, you know it will be awesome. He has a very good eye... I wish I had his luck!
C. tuberculata is one of the reproductive cones of Calamites. It was described by Kaspar Maria von Sternberg (1761-1838) in 1825 as Bruckmannia tuberculata. Lesquereux placed B. tuberculata in Asterphyllites. And, it was later moved to Calamostachys by Bell in 1938. Langford referred to it as Volkmannia wilmingtonia. For more information, see Mazon Monday #99.
