The April 2025 Paleontology Group Meeting was held on April 19th, 2025. It was a Zoom presentation by Jack Kallmeyer titled "A New Cincinnatian Crinoid Species: Discovery, Research, Publication and Working with the Pros".
Jack's program will not be a tedious review of the features of the new species of crinoid that he discovered. Rather, he will weave through the fascinating and sometimes humorous narrative that was years in development. It will feature the many people who influenced him or assisted along the way and, of course, the significant features that make this crinoid unique. In doing so, he will highlight the effect of coincidence – knowing the right people. The impact of years of study – reading professional literature – studying echinoderm anatomy – and how that enters the picture. How learning and applying correct collecting techniques and the significance of data preservation leads to a better project. How to successfully partner with a pro on a joint project and the importance of not just throwing your fossils over the fence expecting instant results. Establishing a meaningful impact statement for publication is paramount today more than ever.
